Manning Pool Service is a proud supporter of the Houston YMCA and their Water Safety programs.

Water safety is extremely important to us at Manning Pool Service, which is why we’ve partnered up with the YMCA to support their “Water Wise” water pool safety classes.

As manager of over 10 pools at The 9900 on Memorial Apartments, Manning Pool Service saw an opportunity to help teach children to save themselves from drowning by sponsoring water safety classes.

So, we funded a week-long YMCA “Water Wise” water safety class for children at The 9900 on Memorial!

What is Water Wise?

Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of death of kids under 14 years old, and the third leading cause of death worldwide?

The YMCA Water Wise Program has the aggressive goal of eliminating drowning – the second leading cause of death of children under the age of 14 in Texas – through water safety education and awareness, and through teaching swimming skills.

Launched in spring 2007, the program builds community awareness about water safety, as well as teaches life-saving water safety and swimming skills to children to help prevent drowning.

The water safety classes are taught by certified swim instructors and trained lifeguards.

What do kids learn in Water Wise water safety classes?

The Water Wise instructors use the “Safety Around Water” model to teach kids that water should be fun, not feared – but only as long as you know how to be safe in and around the water.

We teach fundamental water safety skills, such as:

  • CPR
  • Reach, throw, don’t go
  • How to recognize a safe place to swim

Kids also learn what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly:

  • How to reach surface of water if submerged
  • Safely reaching the edge of a pool
  • Exiting any body of water

Other concepts include:

  • Jump/Push/Turn/Grab: teaches a child to push off the bottom of the pool as they are submerging to get back up to the surface while turning to grab the side of the pool
  • Swim/Float/Swim: teaches children to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety
